How We Calculate Affordability

The rent-to-income ratio is your monthly rent divided by your gross monthly salary, expressed as a percentage. Many guidelines suggest keeping housing at or below 30% of gross income (some use 25%). We show the range that corresponds to 25–30% of your entered salary. Remaining monthly income is your estimated take-home (after federal, state, and FICA for the selected state) minus your rent and a typical non-housing cost estimate based on our city data. That non-housing estimate is illustrative; your actual spending will vary. Use this tool to quickly check whether a rent is in the affordable range and then explore city pages for detailed cost-of-living data.
