How These Estimates Work

Moving cost is a rough multiple of one month’s rent in the destination city, scaled by household size—it does not include quotes from movers, which vary widely. First month rent uses the destination city’s average one-bedroom rent from our data. Deposit is assumed at 1.5× monthly rent; many landlords require one or two months. The 3-month survival figure is three times our estimated total monthly cost (rent plus utilities, groceries, transport, healthcare, misc) for the destination city—a buffer so you can cover several months while settling in. Tax difference is the change in your annual (or monthly) net pay when moving from the origin city’s state to the destination city’s state at the same salary. All values are illustrative; verify with landlords, movers, and tax advisors before making decisions.
